How the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding Helps You to Know God Intimately, to Grow and Learn the Bible

“The highest calling of God is to be a learner,” says the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding through author and Rabbi Jason Sobel . . .

‘Love the Lord with all your heart is the first commandment. To be a lover, you have to be a learner.”

To be a learner, we must know what God says.

To know what God says, we must read what He says.

To learn what He says, we must read both the old and new testaments of His Word – the Holy Bible.

At the age of 15, Jewish children who wanted to, could choose to learn and grow in faith with a rabbi. But they had to be chosen as one who would not bring disgrace to the teacher/rabbi. When they made the ‘cut,’ they were the ‘chosen.’

Other children who were not ‘chosen,’ or did not want to learn beyond what they had learned from the Torah (first five books in the Old Testament), could choose to go into a profession of their own.

Jesus chose his twelve disciples and took them away from their professions of fishing or tax collecting, or of a zealot, to be full-time learners and followers – to be like Him.

Do we have to leave our professions and jobs to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today? No, we don’t, but some may choose to. We can choose to be ‘chosen’ by becoming a learner by reading His Word and making it priority in our lives––in order to become like Him.

We have Jesus, THE Rabbi, at our disposal, 24 hours per day, seven-days per week through the Seven-Fold Holy Spirit of the LORD. What a privilege we have with access to many Bible translations that the early disciples did not have. Are we taking advantage of it?

This is the fifth in the series from Isaiah 11:2, the Seven-Fold Spirit of the Lord, a prophecy about Jesus:

“And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him (Jesus), the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”

Intimate knowledge and understanding of God come from the ONLY Truth that exists: making Jesus our First Love and making His Word priority of each day.

[The Spirit of Understanding will have its own article but cannot be divided from any of the other Spirits.]

How the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding Helps

What the Bible Says About the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding

The word knowledge is a noun in the above Isaiah passage. From the Strong’s dictionary, number 1847 it is da’ath: meaning knowledge, insight, intelligence, understanding, wisdom, cunnng. It is the Hebrew word for knowledge gained through the senses.

Though it is a general term, it can be personal, technical ‘know-how,’ or skill.  Exodus 35:30-33 gives us a perfect example of da’ath knowledge:

See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel, he son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge (da’ath) in all craftmanship; to make designs for working in gold and in silver and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, so as to perform in every inventive work.

Sometime after the Red Sea crossing, all the Israelites gave a freewill offering to the LORD to build the tabernacle in the wilderness. Women whose heart stirred with a skill spun the goat’s hair. God also put in the heart of Bezalel and Oholiab to teach them. And they did the engraving and designing of embroidery in blue and purple and scarlet material, and in fine linen, and of a weaver––all done to the detailed instructions the LORD gave Moses.

We can see from this that there is no end of da’ath knowledge from the LORD to His people for righteous purposes. “For in Him, we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Art and craftmanship can be in any form, from culinary arts, paintings, writing and publishing a book, teaching, building anything and even crafting blog posts. Some Christians have felt called to run, or to make a trip around the world sailing for God’s glory.

God Possesses the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding

Almighty God is omni (all) everything: omnipotent [Almighty or unlimited and all-powerful], omnipresent [everywhere at all times and omniscient [having complete or unlimited knowledge, awareness, or understanding; perceiving all things.]

“Such da’ath knowledge it too wonderful for me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it. Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from They presence?“ (Psalm 139:7).

The whole chapter of Psalm 139 is filled with God’s intimate knowledge and understanding of us, His creation. He sees us [El Roi – the God Who Sees) and knows what we are doing at all times, He was there when we were conceived, and his eyes saw our unformed substance. He wrote a book about us before we were born, spelling out our purpose and destiny on earth. His thoughts toward us outnumber the sands on the seashore. He has called us by our name, and we belong to Him, and He us (if we choose). Imagine that!

How Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding helps to Know God Intimately to Grow and Learn Bible

God Teaches Us His Knowledge and Understanding

“The LORD gives wisdom and from His mouth come da’ath knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).  “He teaches man da’ath knowledge” (Proverbs 94:10).

Jesus came to earth as a Rabbi and taught with His words and example. The words from His mouth contradicted everything that seemed right naturally. He taught and exemplified to do to others as we would have them do to us; to love the unlovely, even our enemies; how to pray and see people healed; how to cast out demons; to embrace persecution, insults, and all kinds of evil falsely on account of Him.

He taught them to rejoice and be exceedingly glad no matter the circumstances; how to confront evil rulers without prior preparation; how to steward money and give from meager resources; and what to expect in the end times when they would be hated on account of His name.

Jesus used harsh words to call out hypocrites [Greek word Hupokrinȏ indicating secrecy; to judge, to divide, separate … to emulate anything as an actor, to act a part or pretend to be what they are not]. He called them:

“hypocrites, children of hell, blind guides, fools, white-washed sepulchers, full of iniquity, serpents, murderers, robbers.”

He did everything he could to make people face the true state of their spiritual nature. He was not politically correct. For crying out loud! He even turned over tables in the church (temple) calling out money changers as thieves, saying, “My house shall be called a HOUSE OF PRAYER but you are making it a robbers’ den!” (Matthew 21:13).

Should this not motivate us to look CLOSELY at Jesus’ life in the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and be more like him––as His Spirit leads? If we are wrong, would we not want to have someone speak the Truth in love to us, so we be right with God?

Is Da’ath Knowledge a Spiritual Gift of the Holy Spirit of the Bible?

Put simply, the answer is no. The spiritual gift of the ‘word of knowledge’ that is found in 1 Corinthians 12:8 says, “For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit.”

The word knowledge here is from the original New Testament Greek, root word gnȏsis (Strong’s #1108) meaning “to know experientially. A present and fragmentary knowledge . . . a clear and exact knowledge which expresses a more thorough participation in the object of knowledge on the part of the knowing subject.”

In other words, there are times when a godly Christian can say or write something to you and it’s like you know that God just spoke to you. You feel as though He read your mail or saw directly into your heart and it impacted you greatly.

How Can a Person Gain this Da’ath Knowledge?

Remember, the five senses have to be involved; therefore, there is a choice to be made here – a quality decision to get it!

It takes time and effort. It takes learning something you are interested in; passion follows faith steps. When it comes to Jesus and spiritual knowledge and intimacy with Him and how to live, it means spending quality time with Him. That comes ONLY through His Word for:

“In the beginning [before all time] was the Word {Christ} and the Word was God Himself. . . And the Word {Christ} became flesh {human, incarnate} and tabernacled {fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile} among us; and we [actually] saw His glory” (John 1:1, 14 Amplified)

My Story of Learning Intimacy with God

Bird Watching in the Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding

Let me tell you a story about how Jesus taught me how important it is to Him that we spend time in His Word, and that it is spending quality time with Him alone that makes Him our First Love:

One day last winter on a snowy day, I was watching the birds eat the seed my husband had just put out for them. I thanked the Lord for being able to watch them and let Him know how much I enjoyed being able to do so through my back porch window in the comfort of my warm, cozy home.

He immediately spoke to my heart so clearly, “That’s how I feel when I watch you eat my Word.”

I thought about the Scripture in Revelation that we have probably misinterpreted to mean Salvation only, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

There’s nothing better than to dine with Jesus over His Word! His da’ath Spirit of Knowledge and Understanding are the servers.

When we spend time with Him and He sees the devotion of our heart to be a learner, He will share His heart with us.

*More Scriptures from Jesus, the Word

Psalm 119:50, “This is my comfort in my affliction, that Thy Word has revived me.”

Psalm 119: 66-67, “Teach me good discernment and da’ath knowledge, for I believe in Thy commandments. Before I was afflicted, I went astray, But now I keep Thy word.

Psalm 119: 71, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Thy statutes.”

Revelation 2:3-4, “You have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary, but I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”

My Challenge to You

*All Scriptures are taken from the New American Standard Version of the Bible (NASB) except where noted. The best study Bible for the real, ordinary Christian, like myself, is the Key Word Study Bible (NASB or NKJV). It has the Strong Dictionary numbers for key words of each Scripture, and gives all the Scriptures in the Old and New Testaments in Hebrew/Greek that apply.

It also has a Concordance, Word Studies, Introductions and Footnotes––all in one book. It is worth at least 10 million dollars to me, which is the value of one of the 48 Guttenberg Bibles remaining of the original 180 printed in 1452. Learning the original word meanings brings intimacy with Jesus when you know that you know.

I challenge you to get a good study Bible like this. If you are a new believer, you will love my book, GOD Who Are You? AND Who Am I? Knowing and Experiencing God by His Hebrew Names. I break down the Hebrew names of God for you. There is no better way to find intimacy with God of the Bible than knowing who His is—that reveals who we are in the process.

How God Found Me: A story of Hope, Redemption and Miracles

By Mariya Pypenko (Feit)
Translated and Written by Lisa Kravchuk

I was born into a family where my parents believed in God, but I did not serve Him and did not attend church. I was very involved at my school as a head-senior student, lead member of a Communist Youth organization and attended an atheist club where we stood against religions and superstition. But I never opposed my parents’ faith. When my parents read us the Bible, I didn’t understand or consider it.

My parents are Russian Germans and were banished to Siberia, Ural region, where I was born on in 1953, in the city of Kospach, Permskaya county. In 1956 our family moved to the city of Vorkuta where my maternal grandma lived. She was sent there due to religious and political reasons, because she was an Adventist believer and said a word in defense of America. Vorkuta was a place where Russians and Germans were sent for different political, religious or criminal reasons.

When I was 14 years old, I experienced the power of the name of Jesus even though I did not understand it. It happened when my brothers got into a fight and my older sister wanted to punish them. Our mom was gone, and my second oldest sister did not think punishment was appropriate; so the two began arguing.

I charged at them with tightly held fists saying, “Stop! Or I will kill you.” There was so much anger in me, they got scared, hid in a corner and began saying, “Satan, leave her, in the name of Jesus Christ.” That very moment, my anger went away. I was very startled by the change in me after these words.

God Found Me

Lightening landscape with text overlay of How God Found Me, a story of hope, redemption and miraclesI did not search for God; He found me! When I was 15 years old, my classmates decided to seek fortune-telling about their future and husbands the night before Christmas.

My father told me that it was forbidden to do that, so I said my first prayer before bedtime, “God, if You exist, then show me my future!” That night I had a dream where God revealed Himself to me and showed me that He is my future! I dreamed of a young man of average heights, dressed in brocade, silver suit (He did not show Himself in a dress, as I did not know how people were dressed in the days of Jesus and would have not understood).

His hair was wavy, the color of chestnut running to his shoulders. His eyes were visually vivid, bluish and full of love. I felt as though I was x-rayed in front of Him and He knows my past, present and the future. I had a knowledge that I would search for a man that resembles His image but would not find anyone like Him.

That morning we had a Christian friend visiting, who led my mother to believing and who was sent to Vorkuta for 25 years due to evangelizing. I told them my dream. Mother said, “It is Jesus Christ and He wants you to accept Him in your life,” but I continued to live as usual.

After God Found Me, I Lived My Life As Usual

It was exactly a year later when I had the same kind of dream the night of Christmas, but I continued to live my life. I finished school and enrolled in a Technology School to become a Certified Nurse. One night I had to stay late. When I was leaving campus, I noticed there were men walking, two from one side and one from another. There was no one else around.

They noticed me and turned my way. I understood they wanted to harm me and a thought went through me, “God if you exist, help me!” I was a fast runner, but this time I could not even move. I felt as though my feet were cast iron. The men continued walking my way and I heard them speak to each other, “Let’s not go her way. It’s a strong and tall guy by her, and he has a sword!”

I looked both ways but could not see anyone. I heard them repeat these words to themselves and they turned around. When they were a minimum of 10 meters from me, my feet suddenly became normal again and I took off so fast like never before.

At home, I told my mother about the experience and asked her who that “tall, strong and with a sword” could be, and she said it was an angel God sent to protect me because He thinks of me and because she was worried and prayed for me.

At that time, the church where my mother and two older sisters were attending was praying for the children of believing parents, that the Lord would deliver and baptize them. It was not legally allowed at that time, and there was no actual building to gather in as the prayer house was burned.

“God, if You exist, give me Your Holy Spirit or I will turn to the secular living.”

Because of government persecution, Christian gatherings were done at homes or apartments. It was a Sunday, a day of fasting. Suddenly I had a compelling desire to say, “God, if You exist, give me Your Holy Spirit or I will turn to the secular living,” for I was at the crossroad either faith in God or the world.

When I said these words, my mouth opened and I began talking and singing on clear angelic tongues. I felt as though God lifted me, along with my baby sister, unto the clouds. I was experiencing Divine Presence.

My brother Peter, who was in the same room, had a vision at the same time. He saw a black bird take off from my head to meet a dove coming from heaven. There was a fight in midair and feathers flying around; then, the dove increased in size and swallowed the black bird. When the dove landed on my head, I began singing and talking in heavenly languages.

It’s not people who seek God, but God seeks people! He knows our hearts. Don’t get despaired or discouraged. He hears the prayers of mothers and fathers. Click to Tweet

My mom was excited and took me to church that day. It was my first time stepping into the place of prayer. When those present found out that God answered their prayers, they could not pray in their own language. Everyone prayed and sang in holy languages. It was a huge glory to God!!

It’s not people who seek God, but God seeks people! He knows our hearts. Don’t get despaired or discouraged. He hears the prayers of mothers and fathers.

Often people seek the gifts and blessings of God, but God gives as He desires and sees fit. It is important to desire and love the Spirit of God Himself, and the rest God will provide.

God is worthy of people’s love. He is grand! He chooses people from variety of families, nationalities, and denominations; for He knows the past, the present and the future.

He hears prayers and continues His works of saving souls. I am very grateful God found me, and to this day, He is my greatest Friend and Husband according to my heart. I give Him all praise! He found me on time, for He is a God of a Right time!

El Roi: God Who Sees You and Knows Your Name

“So, you’re moving to the lake to retire and die here, huh?” Our new neighbor retrieved his dog with these words and left.

El Roi - God who sees our affliction, circumstances and hears our misery. He also sees the future plans and purposes for our life.Jim and I were left shocked and speechless. Oh! how I wish I could have a second chance to answer him. I’d say, “No sir, we serve a God who sees us and knows us by our name, and our life has only just begun!”

Since moving to our lake-view home, we’ve seen the assignments from the Lord – El Roi [the God Who Sees] come into a more clear focus. That assignment for me involves you, for as I’ve come to know El Roi better, He has given me an avenue to help you do the same–to know Him, really know Him and who He is.

First of all, this will be a backwards article, because I’d like to start at the ending (or almost ending) of where I am now as I experience El Roi. After getting settled in our house in the winter, all the summer greenery outside was its ordinary, cold and bare bushes. But something wonderful happened when Spring drew near.

El Roi the God who creates red azaleas sees you and me too

One morning, I opened the front curtains as my eyes beheld beautiful, red flowers on the bushes outside, all along the front of the house–azaleas! I could hardly believe it. I had always wanted azaleas, but we never lived where they would grow.

In awe of God’s grace, love and mercy to me, I kept thanking Him as I felt His love sweep over me. He seemed to say to my heart, “I’ve held these just for you. They are from Me. You are mine, and I love you. You have not come to the lake to die. I have a plan for you here.”

Slowly, more flowers kept popping up and out. This article will give you a peek into my beautiful world. They are blooming as I write today and share fresh images with you.

This article is an introduction to what the God Who Sees You has given me to share. All last year of 2017, He directed me to start a blog site and to tear up my book, GOD Who Are You? AND Who Am I?: Knowing and Experiencing God by His Hebrew Names, into 15 minute segments….to make it a free online eCourse.

The book examines, not only El Roi, but eleven more prominent Hebrew names of God that help us know Him more intimately. And, by learning who He is, we learn who we are, where we have come from and where we are going.

El Roi – The ‘God Who Sees’ Asks You Two Questions

God Who Sees Purple Clematis
God Who Sees Purple Clematis

These two questions, “Where have you come from, and where are you going?” the angel of the Lord spoke to Hagar in Genesis 16. She had been running away from her circumstances until she came to the end of her road. He called her by her name when she had not spoken her name. It was because of this recognition that this ‘Person’ who spoke to her was God, that she named Him El Roi – the God Who Sees.

Furthermore, God told her that the child she was carrying should be named Ishmael, meaning, “the Lord has heard of your misery.” She felt unloved, only used; not appreciated, only abused. Only in the God Who Saw her did she find Someone who had her best interests at heart.

There’s no need to get into the details of the 8 principles of El Roi right now, because we do that in the first chapter of the book and the eCourse.

You can learn more about it by watching my 5-minute video where I tell about the 40 women who helped me write it–with their testimonies – HERE.
